The Social Media’s influence on Society – The Good, the Bad, the Ugly!
When did this all start?
Well, the history goes back to the year 1996 when eBay first got started with the customer feedback forum, and then that idea developed lately into the community forums in the late 90’s. Then it all began instantly with more and more growing internet awareness among the people. With the social media sites like LinkedIn (started in 2003), Youtube (started in 2005), Facebook (which started in 2004), Twitter (started in 2006) and there have been much more since then.
The question now is that with all kinds of people, all age groups and all cultures involved in these social media sites (Facebook tops Google for weekly traffic in the US), did it good for the society or bad for it? To have that explained I have made a category of three.
Good or bad for people in general:
Why do teenagers or anyone else use the social media for? The simple most answer will be; getting to know people outside your current social space, meeting new people, sharing experiences and to what I call, increasing your social circle. If it is only this, then it sure will be OK, but is it?
The answer is NO! There are many people (both teens and elders) who are using these social media sites to have their identities hidden, they have fake profiles (this is where the ugly part gets in) and all fake information about them. Google said a month or so, which I will recall as, why join a social media site, why hide your faces, why all that private profiles if you really want to share and experience and increase the social circle. I do agree with them a bit, but…. That thing has issues.
Not everyone out there on these social media sites like Facebook, are there to just go in and add every person they see as a friend. They might be there to get in contact with their loved ones who they know. So the point is that; it all depends on the use of it by you. But with the entire growing craze among the teens it is also misused.
It has “good” also, but the bad seems to be a bit more. The reason is that getting in contact with people is not bad, but the fact that the time spent on these sites is really an issue. You will see that elders and teens alike, even during their working hours are using these sites, such as Twitter and Facebook on their cell phones etc. That makes it a real problem.
Good or bad from the marketing perspective:
To be honest, it is like a heaven for the markets if they get to use it perfectly. The social media has all the marketing wants, it has all sorts of people, all kinds and cultures and ethnicities of people on one platform, and that is where you will get to market your brand.
Think of it like this; if you were to get your brand launched in an international exhibition where people from all over the world will visit. Of course you will have a huge advantage, and that advantage is given to you via the social media sites.
